Heathen: Victims Of Deception

Until the mid-80s, Bay Area audiophiles would go to small concerts at places like Kabuki Nightclub, Mabuhay Gardens, The Old Waldorf, and Winterland. By the time my friends and I were old enough, these places had closed. In order to catch rock acts, we went to The Stone, which used to be located on Broadway, near Montgomery Street.

One local act we saw several times was Heathen. Around Memorial Day 1991, my friend Todd was done at City College SF. He told me to come home from UCSC, so that I could hear the new Heathen album, Victims Of Deception .

Its progressive thrash was in line with, for example, Dark Angel's Time Does Not Heal . It's also where Metallica should have gone, following ...And Justice For All . The songs on Victims Of Deception are long, politically-aware, with a few tempo changes.

Heathen were always an opening act. I *think* it was early 1992, when we saw Heathen as the headliner, at The Stone. It was sad; hardly anybody was in attendance. We easily got to the front. One of the drummer's cymbals was broken, missing a pie-shaped fragment. It looked like Pac Man. Nevertheless, the show was very good.

My wife did the math, and had to do a double-take, that, in early 1992, she and I were 18 and 19, respectively. She mumbled, "Someone who is 19 today, was born in......2001 or 2002!"

But yeah, Heathen's Victims Of Deception is now a whopping 30 years-old. The good news is, the recording is NOT the fat, thick, airless, compressed, Pro-Tooled productions of today. It has smaller, focused images, with good detail and speed. It even has some space between the images. But check out the music, progressive thrash, which certain audiophiles latch on to.
