30 years ago, The Absolute Sound did not publish 12 times a year. It combined some of the months. But even at that, TAS did not always get the issues out in a timely manner. I did not receive my copy of the May/June 1991 TAS until well into May. At the time, my sophomore year at UCSC was winding down. Within the papers, studying for finals, and year-end ceremonies, getting the new TAS was a nice diversion.
On MTV, we saw the video for Too Much Joy's "Crush Story." One of my dorm neighbors remarked, "Hmmm, it's not everyday you see an iguana in a video."
When we looked up from our books and labs, "Crush Story" reminded us that the year was coming to an end. Forget TAS and hooking up an amp. If you were single, you were under pressure to hook up with or find someone, before the school year ended. "Shoot," said my neighbor Nora, "If you do have someone, you damn well better shag up with them!"
I can't believe that "Crush Story" is now a whopping 30 years-old. But my wife still likes it, though perhaps not as much as our Gen Z son and daughter. The latter are even more enthusiastic about "Crush Story," than their mom is.
