The Fixx, "Secret Separation"

An Inmate wrote, "You're always so open, inviting, friendly, human, and for the most part fun. And you actually use pop/rock! Anyway, as you know, I graduated from SF's Polytechnic High, not long before it closed [in 1973]. You guys probably were just being born then. After that, I went away for college. I only returned to SF to see my folks. But I really enjoy your tales and coverage of SF, filling in for years I missed."

35 years ago, after our friends played softball in Golden Gate Park, I went over to Jenny's house, which was in the Sunset [sorry, we don't have any pictures from the 80s]. Her stepdad was out, but her mom was in. The mom saw how dirty Jenny and I were, and told us, "Drink water, go get cleaned up, and I'll make you something to eat."

While the living room had NAD electronics, Jenny and I went upstairs. She turned on her little mini-stereo. Some FM station played The Fixx's "Secret Separation." Jenny thought it "rocked harder" than The Fixx's older "Are We Ourselves" and "Saved By Zero."

The upstairs bathroom had a deep sink, which was more like what you'd find in a laundry room. You could stick your head under the faucet. As high school freshmen, our faces were pockmarked with acne. "Hey, you're doing a good job of cleaning your pores," Jenny announced. "They now look like dimples." She then giggled, reached into her pants, removed her dimpled [New Freedom?] pad, and tried to wipe my face with it. I had no sisters, so that was as direct as I had come, to menstruation. Jenny calmed down, sighed, and taught me that, for girls, menstruation was Topic A, B, and C.

So yeah, you'd think of Jenny, each time you heard "Secret Separation." But its churning riff can be infectious, and the freshness makes you feel as if it's still spring/summer 1986.

Jenny's mom made salad with what is now called "spring mix." But in those days, since it wasn't iceberg lettuce, it was "different." And more exciting, textured, and tasty.

After I left Jenny's house, and went home, MTV would play The Fixx's "Secret Separation."

Like the Inmate above, Jenny went away for college, and really only came back to SF, to see her folks.

I recently got in touch with Jenny, and she is just like everyone else our age. As much as she detested menstruation, it did define her as a woman. But now that it's coming to an end, her sense of womanhood has changed. And of course, the subject of music came up. What hasn't changed is that Jenny still listens to and likes The Fixx's "Secret Separation."
