GTR, "When The Heart Rules The Mind"

Sorry, we just don't have many photos from before the 90s. So we'll have to make do with more recent ones.

Late in the Spring 1986 semseter, I went over to my friend Jenny's house, before making a somewhat short walk to Golden Gate Park, to play softball. True hippies (not the wannabes of my generation), Jenny's mom and stepdad were the nicest people ever. I had just taken an interest in home audio, and their family had NAD electronics. The stepdad said that the NAD did not look rich or pretty. "But you know what?" he joked, "The big buttons are better for my fat fingers!"

Perhpas it was KFOG, but that was the first time GTR's "When The Heart Rules The Mind" was identified. The DJ mentioned that GTR were a partnership between guitarists Steve Hackett (Genesis) and Steve Howe (Asia, Yes). Later that summer, "When The Heart Rules The Mind" would become a hit, and to this day, it still brings us joy.

Too bad the album's songs aren't as good as "The Hunter" and "When The Heart Rules The Mind." The remastered Japanese CD shows that the recording isn't as bad as the original cassette, LP, and CD led us to believe.

About a decade ago, my dad was at SF Kaiser, to check out his neck, back, and knees. He and I overheard, "I know that laugh! It must be John Lum." Sure enough, it was Jenny's mom, who was wearing a bandana. Due to cancer treatments, her hair had fallen out. Still mentally sharp, Jenny's mom remembered me coming over, during the mid-80s. She even remembered that, for school, I had a Thermos (to keep it warm) of chicken noodle soup, and frozen juice boxes (which thawed, by the time I had lunch). Not that Jenny and I ever stopped listen to music of the 80s, but songs like GTR's "When The Heart Rules The Mind" did reappear, and take on new meaning.

Sadly, Jenny's mom succumbed to cancer, in the early 2010s. Her personality taught me how to be open to other opinions, perspectives, backgrounds, ways of life. In fact, I got the "Give it a try, but you don't have to like (or dislike) it" from her.
