Late in the Spring 1986 semester, my classmate Larry and I went over to our friend David's house. The latter's family was well-to-do. They had cable TV, a rack stereo, exercise equipment, an IBM PC and Commodore 64, and multiple cars.
If you think of a leprechaun with a brown beard, blow him up to around 6'2", and you'd get David's dad. David's dad told us three boys to get into the Volvo station wagon. He drove us across the Golden Gate Bridge, when The Moody Blues' "Your Wildest Dreams" came on. He sort of got wistful, and had that distant stare. I guess The Moody Blues conjured up memories of a time before he had kids. And here in 1986, with The Moody Blues going all synthpop, he understood that the band was gaining a new audience.
He took us to lunch in Sausalito. Still sort of wistful, David's dad then said that, instead of going back to San Francisco, "Let's head for the coast."
As we went through the hills, radio reception was spotty. When we got to the Marin coast (sorry, we don't have any old photos. You'll have to make do with more recent ones), our Walkmen could just barely receive some stations. Perhaps K101 played "Your Wildest Dreams." David, Larry, and I took a deep breath in the somewhat foggy marine air. "Your Wildest Dreams" just made it seem like those days would last forever...
