Ozzy Osbourne, "Shot In The Dark"

During the Spring 1986 semester, my last class of the day was P.E. One of my classmates was the thick-bodied power forward from the girls' JV basketball team. When the P.E. class had basketball, she got all gung-ho, and made sure that she was playing against me. She rounded up her teammates, and led the battle charge, "It's time to get chummy with Lummy!"

Whether or not I had the ball, she loved to hand-check me. When boxing out, she couldn't wait, to hold her arm across my chest, and then stick her big ass into my upper leg/lower hips. When her team was on offense, she'd give up the ball, seek me out, and try to post-up, again sticking her big ass into me.

She would announce, "He might not have the best body," point to her head, and state, "But Lummy's good up here."

She would ask me to stick around after school, so she could work one-on-one with me. Since our school was on the southwest corner of San Francisco, right across the street from Lake Merced, it was often foggy. On those outdoor courts, there was always a boombox. In fact, there'd be multiple boomboxes. Anyway, when one of them blared Ozzy Osbourne's "Shot In The Dark," she perked up, "I love that song!"

"Shot In The Dark" started as a composition from bassist Phil Soussan. When he joined Ozzy, they re-worked it. It's kind of interesting that, when audiophiles email me, they say that, if "Shot In The Dark" was one of Spring 1986's better examples of heavy metal, then the genre was still in a rut. But that was 35 years in the past. Nowadays, we can pick and choose. And if you like "Shot In The Dark," great!

The power forward watched the music video, and said, "Is that Dweezil Zappa?"
