Although, as a child, Janet Jackson had done acting and singing, it was really "What Have You Done For Me Lately," which was her commercial breakthrough. In early 1986, she came out with Control . She wisely tried to wiggle out from her dad's, um, control. She signed with A&M, which smartly hired the production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. They embued Ms. Jackson with their signature crisp, snappy, focused, fast sound.
You can do the stereotypical audiophile thing, and freeze in the home stereo's sweet spot. But since we were in high school, when "What Have You Done For Me Lately" came out, we enjoyed it via boombox, Walkman, mini-stereo in the bedroom, car radio, and MTV.
When Ms. Jackson came out with Control , she was getting her marriage to James DeBarge annulled, and had not yet turned 20!
