40 years ago, the 1980-81 school year was coming to an end. My childhood neighbors had moved to South San Francisco. They had a blue van, in which they put in a side-facing bench seat. California had not yet enacted seat belt laws then. Whether that family just went on short, nearby trips to shop or play sports, or if it went down to Disneyland, I loved riding in that van.
And then, soon after we pulled out of the driveway, to go to Serramonte, some radio station, perhaps KFOG, introduced Berkeley's Greg Kihn Band. It then played a new song, "The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'Em)." We instantly took to it, and man, it made it feel as if the van were galloping down an open highway, even though we were merely taking the streets.
Obviously, as elementary school kids, we were years away from relationships. So breakup songs, good or not, did not bring us down, emotionally :-)
