N.W.A., "Alwayz Into Somethin'"

During the Spring 1991 quarter, I went home to San Francisco, and met up with friends in the Sunset. We had white, black, Hispanic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Filipino, Polynesian, Turkish, and Assyrian. When we heard N.W.A.'s "Alwayz Into Somethin'," we looked at each other, and came to the realization that west coast rap and G-Funk had become part of the American mainstream. By the end of the 80s, rap was already popular. But "Alwayz Into Somethin'" just cemented the deal.

Funny thing was, regardless of ethnicity, none of my friends was remotely gangsta. Heck, we weren't even a clique, let alone a gang. No one would steal or commit acts of violence. Indeed, most were meek and mild Asian girls. Some were sassy, but none could rap. But that did not prevent us from observing history unfold. N.W.A. were a major hip hop influence, and their fear/distrust/disdain of the police ring louder today.
