S.O.S. Band, "The Finest"

"Now, on digital compact disc," announced Bay Area radio stations, 35 years ago, as they introduced the S.O.S. Band's "The Finest." Damned if we could hear a difference, though :-)

My friends and I (most of us were high school freshmen) had gone tide pooling at Moss Beach. The fog burned off early, leaving gorgeous days. As we made our way back into San Francisco, we were near Stonestown, when our Walkmen picked up those radio stations, introducing "The Finest."

You know what, though? Regardless of format, "The Finest" sounded sharp, detailed, and gripping, on account of another fine production from Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. In just a few months, they'd reach superstardom, by producing Janet Jackson's Control . But "The Finest's" lovely ending made it feel as though those balmy Spring 1986 afternoons would go on forever...

We have recently been going back to the coast (okay, we never really stopped going), and...now many of our kids are in high school. No, listening to "The Finest" does not make us feel as though we are back in high school. But it does make us feel like we are not old.
