Heart, "Nothin' At All"

35 years ago, we'd go home, drop our stuff, kick off our shoes, turn in the TV, put on MTV, and grab a snack. And that was perhaps the first time you saw Heart's "Nothin' At All."

During that Spring 1986 semester, my last class of the day was P.E. My classmate Ho and I took MUNI Metro part-way home, before going our separate ways. She told me to wait up for her, and reminded me to bring my PE uniform home. I waited briefly outside of the girls' locker room. Upon seeing me, Ho went, "Damn, hold on," and went back into the locker room. My presence reminded her that she , too, needed to bring home her PE uniform.

See, in those days, we students typically only bought one PE uniform set. We'd bring them home on Fridays, so that we could wash them over the weekend.

After that, Ho and I went to our regular hallway lockers, which were located close to each other. Grabbed our stuff, including Walkmen, and left campus. Ho remarked that she liked ending off with PE, "It doesn't matter how dirty and stinky we are. We get to go home afterwards. And if PE is your last class, you don't feel rushed, to get to your next class."

As we were making the long walk to the MUNI Metro stop on Junipero Serra, Ho started bouncing up and down. Then she started singing Heart's "Nothin' At All." No, nothing we audiophiles have done has ever come close to Ho's effervescent bounce. When the train came, Ho and I actually got seats! She dozed off, with her head on my shoulder.

On "Nothin' At All," Johnny Colla (from Huey Lewis & The News) sings backup, and the guitar solo is by Survivor's Frankie Sullivan.

As we were approaching Van Ness station, I gently nudged Ho, to wake her up. She then asked if I had free time. Instead of going home, she wanted to go shopping downtown. I thought for a split second, then said, "As long as we can find a place to pee, I'm good."

When we got to Macy's, no, Heart was not playing. You kind of wish "Nothin' At All" had been playing, though. Ho tried on tops from, I think, the likes of Esprit, L.A. Gear, and Tommy Hilfiger. She looked down, sniffed, and winced, "Eew, I stink," and said she felt bad, for being this stinky, while trying on clothes.

Market Street had small record stores. They all carried Heart's eponymous album. Well, actually, in Spring 1986, those record stores (a) stocked more cassettes than vinyl, and (b) had not yet brought in CDs.

To get back to our respective homes, Ho went one way, while I went the other. As we split, Ho smiled, "And don't forget to bring back your [PE] uniform on Monday. I do that all the time. Suit cut!"

Heart's "Nothin' At All" is still such a feel-good song. My wife loves it. Although, for her, "Nothin' At All" came out, when she was still in middle school. Nevertheless, my wife bounces along to "Nothin' At All," and it's like it's 1986 all over again. Sigh, good times...
