No, I don't have any photos of MUNI Metro light rail from 1986. But 35 years ago, I took MUNI Metro to school. And because parts of the video for Level 42's "Something About You" took place on a train, there was something reassuring, about hearing the song, while on Metro. Thing was, there was no radio reception, in Metro's underground and tunnel portions. And, since Walkmen drained batteries, you were loathe to play, fast forward, and rewind cassettes.
Still, it was a testament to 1986's variety, breadth, and depth of popular music, that the sophistipop of "Something About You" not only rose up the charts, but was quite comfortable there.
When "Something About You" is reproduced accurately, it can transport us back 35 years. Coming off of a wet year, the Bay Area's weather was sparkling. But taking the L-Taraval out to the Zoo, you'd hit the fog bank. Some of my friends lived in the Sunset, closer to Golden Gate Park. So then I'd take the N-Judah, to get part-way home. And then, the next school day, I'd take the M-Oceanview, to get out to school. And for a moment, we are all 14-year-old high school freshmen again. Ah, the power of music.
