John Cougar Mellencamp

35 years ago, my classmates and I would head to the cost. We looked west, and one guy remarked, "Man, there's nothing until you hit Japan."

When finishing the depressing album, Scarecrow , John Cougar Mellencamp and company needed a more light and uplifting song. So they rattled off an ode to the sunny 60s, "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A."

Beach or no beach, we did enjoy "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." Okay, so while San Francisco was on the edge of the continent, if we looked to the southwest, the U.S. still had Hawaii. But given that most people were not Americans, "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." probably piqued the interest of foreigners interested in American pop culture, music, and history.

"R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." would peak at #2, behind Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus."
