In the 80s, we relied on radio and MTV, for new music. You could read the "underground" publications. You could go to concerts. But mostly, you had to tap others, who ponied up, and bought new music. When it came to heavy metal, you let your friends be the guinea pig, take chances, and buy music. Some were more enthusiastic about blindly buying new music. Such was the case with my friend and newspaper route coworker, Todd. I had returned to UC Santa Cruz, for the Spring 1991 quarter. Todd actually called from Hokubei Mainichi, and said, "Next time you come home, you gotta check this out."
He was referring to the new album from Brazil's Sepultura, Arise . Featuring Scott Burns' production, Arise sounded faster, clearer, more focused and detailed. You easily heard how the band took punk rock, and grafted/added/melded industrial grooves, Max Cavalera's monster vocals, and Igor Cavalera's Slayer-like drumming.
Don't miss the title track, "Dead Embryonic Cells," "Desperate Cry" (we named one of our bowling teams this), "Infected Voice," and a nice cover of Motorhead's "Orgasmatron." Arise was kind of an inflection point, in rock music's development. After that, bands were given the green light, to experiment with Middle Eastern scales, groove metal, rap, and Afro/Caribbean/Latin percussion.
I can't believe it's been almost 30 years, since I went home to San Francisco, met Todd in the basement where the Hokubei Mainichi was printed, and borrowed Sepultura's Arise . You listen to it now, and parts are still as fresh as they were in 1991. You can't help, but play air drums. You haven't had that much dexterity since, well, 1991.
