Crystal Waters, "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)"

30 years ago, I was thoroughly ensconced in the April 1991 issue of Stereophile. It introduced Corey Greenberg, who brought a fresh perspective to reviewing. But then, my dorm neighbor, Bridgette, a dirty blonde, tapped my shoulder. She wanted me to accompany her to the Planned Parenthood, on Santa Cruz's Pacific Avenue Mall, which was then being re-built, from the October 1989 earthquake.

Bridgette had to refill her birth control pill prescription. Hers came in a blister pack, in rows by week, with one placebo. She complained, "Why do I even bother?," and explained that she hardly saw her boyfriend, who was in SoCal. "I'm not really sexually active, and this stuff f---- with your body."

We then went to a book/record store, and that was when we first heard Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)." We assumed that "Crystal Waters" was a stage name, but no, that was her real name. With its "la da dee, la dee da" refrain, "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" was a breakthrough of sorts. It showed that house music could also be serious.

Indeed, Santa Cruz had more than its fair share of homelessness. The song was about someone who had lost her job in retail, so she had to look good, and sing on street corners. And that certainly put high-end audio in perspective and context.
