The Marcels' doo-wop version of "Blue Moon" is now 60 years-old. When we were children in the late-70s, our bodies couldn't do the bass registers, but there was a certain charm to that. Anyway, adults had to tell us that "Blue Moon" was originally a ballad, written in 1934, by Richard Rodgers. Yes, that Richard Rodgers, of Broadway musical fame.
Apparently, The Marcels were named after a hair style, called the marcel wave. Hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, The Marcels were originally a mixed-raced quintet. Not long after "Blue Moon" went to #1, the two Caucasian members left the band.
