I turned 6 in 1978, and as a child, you do not control which music gets played. You're at the mercy of what your family and neighbors play. As a child, you may not have many memories, but you can't forget the anti-Muslim attitudes of my neighbors. As of this writing, three other audiophiles have emailed me about this, too. With them being older than I am, they provided more detailed stories of the people around them not liking Cat Stevens' conversion.
One of the audiophiles expressed that, while he didn't care one way or another about Stevens' conversion (he also cited Muhammad Ali and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), he was bummed that Yusuf Islam, around 1980, stopped performing and making music.
For me, "Moonshadow" was my favorite, and I hardly ever heard it on the radio, until I got to college in the early 90s. Then it felt like all was right/good again.
Yusuf did not return to popular music until the mid-2000s.
