The Ocean Blue, "Mercury"

30 years ago, my dorm had an L-shaped floorplan. The inner crook of the L was the bathroom. The outside vertex had a triple room, occupied by Lumberjack Girl, straight-blonde Hailey, and curly blonde Andrea. My room was adjacent to the girls' triple. Andrea, who did not have a boyfriend, often got sexiled by LG and Hailey, both of whom did have boyfriends.

For me & Andrea, one of our favorite new albums of the Fall 1990 quarter was Prefab Sprout's Jordan: The Comeback . For the Spring 1991 quarter, one of our favorites was The Ocean Blue's Cerulean . During those beautiful afternoons, Andrea and I would walk down to UCSC's Great Meadow. Lying on the grass, we loved looking up at the sky, set to The Ocean Blue's "Marigold" and "A Separate Reality."

"Ripped in two, then pasted back again
Then crumpled up inside
Then tossed aside
You know that it feels so bad"

Andrea's favorite song from Cerulean was "Mercury." However, we did not know which mercury, if any, the song was referring to. Andrea posed, "The car company? The dime? The element? The god? The planet?"

Back in my dorm room, Andrea and I could hear her roommates having sex. Heck, on occasion, we'd hear the two girls (separately, not together) above my room having sex. Interestingly, we never heard my other neighbor, Troy, ever having sex. With his loud and aggressive rap music, maybe he scared the girls away.

But then MTV played the video for "Mercury," and Andrea and I forgot about our surroundings, forgot about schoolwork. At the time, neither she nor I had an S.O. So "Mercury" made us, like audiophiles trying to decide between two products, determine which was worse: (a) not having dated anyone good, or (b) breaking up from one you really liked, due to him/her going to a different and distant school from yours.
