During spring break 1991, my friend ACS and I headed for San Francisco's Performance Audio. As we were on Divisadero & California, she snickered and giggled.
"What's so funny?" I asked.
ACS pointed across the street, at a restaurant called Ben Wah. She then joked that they were named after Ben-Wa balls.
Instead of getting two AudioQuest Ruby interconnects, I bought one Topaz, and one Quartz, which I still have.
I then had to return to UC Santa Cruz, for the Spring 1991 quarter. There, I came across The Ocean Blue's new album, Cerulean , which would become, over the next year, one of the most influential.
The morning fog would burn off early, leading to beautiful and sunny weather, appropriate for the title track, "Cerulean."
On a recent return, the air was warm, and the skies were blue. Then it hit me: this environment and weather were why we found it so difficult to focus, and study and do homework. ACS, who later would attend UC Berkeley, remarked, "No wonder you guys (UCSC students) don't get anything done!"
The Ocean Blue sounded like they were a British band. Their music fit right in, at Santa Cruz. But no, The Ocean Blue were from Hershey, PA.
