If high pressure hovers over the Bay Area, the fog is low, does not extend inland, and burns off quickly. Such was the case in Spring 1986, when we began to hear Simply Red's "Holding Back The Years." My classmates looked at each other, "Man, how can a UK white dude sing like that!"
Our high school was (still is) located near Lake Merced, not far from the ocean. Walkmen in tow, we loved hitting the coast. We'd look west, breathe in the marine air, and love hearing "Holding Back The Years." Even if someone had known about CD, no one had ever seen one, much less had a player. Later that year, SF record stores would replace vinyl with CDs, and dedicate more space to cassettes. Simply Red's Picture Book was one of the well-stocked/ubiquitous CD titles. But we had it on cassette.
