After DLR left/was fired, EVH actually asked Scandal's Patty Smyth to be the band's new lead singer. Because Sammy Hagar's higher-pitched voice didn't sound like DLR, that was a sea change. But the thought of going with Patty Smyth has always brought out the "What if's."
Because I was in Honolulu, I missed the Monsters of Rock (Kingdom Come, Dokken, Metallica, Scorpions, Van Halen) concert at Candlestick. As I was about to come back to San Francisco, I was at a party, hosted by some Punahou friends and relatives. MTV played the video for Van Halen's "When It's Love," and I asked my parents to live with my grandmother, so I could transfer to Punahou!
But when I did return to SF, I met my future wife. Years later, at our wedding banquet, which was kind of a mini high school reunion, "When It's Love" was played. A table with our old high school friends stopped eating, stood up, and sang the "Nah, nah, nah" ending. THAT was the spirit we audiophiles often forget or neglect to posses and bring.
