Queen, "A Kind Of Magic"

Growing up in the 80s in the Bay Area, we had the "Big 3" team sports: baseball, basketball, and football. Soccer was a distant fourth, and all the others barely blipped on the radar.

During spring break 1986, some of my friends met at Moscone Playground to play softball. Afterward we walked along the Marina, to the Palace Of Fine Arts. Back then, it was a sleepy destination, with most people going to the nearby Exploratorium. The latter has since moved to the Broadway pier. But the Palace Of Fine Arts is used for wedding and prom photoshoots.

Anyway, one of my friends actually had brought a pair of roller skates. And with Queen's new "A Kind Of Magic" playing via boombox, she actually skated a few circles under the rotunda of the Palace Of Fine Arts.

When we returned to school, popular music was so deep, that we hardly ever heard "A Kind Of Magic." So when you do hear it nowadays, it is a fun ditty, skating or not. Speaking of which, after college, the real world beckoned, and we've never been able to live close enough, or have the numbers, to play organized baseball/softball, basketball, and football. A small number learned to skate, and took up ice hockey, which, while supremely fun and draining, is even more expensive than other sports.
