In 1976, as I was turning 4, The Doobie Brothers' "Takin' It To The Streets" could be heard not just at home in San Francisco, but in my grandmother's neighborhood in Oakland's Fruitvale. People would be sitting on homes' front steps, with music playing from either indoors, or from a "transistor radio" boombox.
But I also recall the adults' look of consternation. I didn't know it then, but they were taken aback, because "Takin' It To The Streets" was the band's introduction to Michael McDonald, which was a sea change. Apparently, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter recommended McDonald, who had worked with Steely Dan.
S.F. and Oakland streets are notorious for being "cheese graters." But my dad tells me that the same streets were also choppy, during the 70s. Sigh, some things don't change. Still, I personally, as a 4-year-old, liked "Takin' It To The Streets," and, 45 years later, still do.
