"Figure it out, guys!!!"
During finals week of the Winter 1991 quarter, my dormmies needed to get out. So we decided to walk down from UCSC's Crown College, to the Great Meadow. Problem was, you were supposed to bring one light-colored shirt, and one dark-colored shirt. To split into two teams, one side was to wear white, while the other wore a dark color. But that did not happen, and when we split into two opposing teams, going "shirts versus skins" didn't work, because each team had girls. Some of the girls on the "skins" team did not necessarily want to go topless.
When we got back to the dorms, we saw, for the first time, the video for Queen's "I'm Going Slightly Mad." Unbeknownst to the public, lead singer Freddie Mercury was already suffering from AIDS. In the video, makeup covered his facial scars and splotches. Supposedly, he had lost weight. So he wore extra layers of clothing under the costumes.
Both while Mercury was alive, and posthumously, radio stations apparently haven't played "I'm Going Slightly Mad." Because students played it, "I'm Going Slightly Mad" wafted through the dorms. But, to my knowledge, radio stations, in both Monterey and SF Bays, did not play it.
"I'm Going Slightly Mad" can be taken as Mercury's light-hearted bit of humor, about his mental and emotional struggles with AIDS.
