Around spring break 1991, my relatives from Seattle came down to San Francisco. To them, S.F. was warm. So instead of getting jackets, they only needed souvenir t-shirts. They also brought down Jill Sobule's Things Here Are Different , which apparently came out the year before. Lo and behold, it was produced by Todd Rundgren.
Sobule's voice was waif-like, but not emaciatedly thin. Like other songs on the album, "Too Cool To Fall In Love" did not come right out, and shout. It was subtle, suggestive, understated, and hinting.
I actually brought this with me, to Ultimate Sound, then located in the Sherman Clay building on Kearny. That was a music instrument store, but Ultimate Sound were in the basement, by the sheet music. I'll never forget, outside the sliding glassdoor entrance, the spools of AudioQuest, Kimber, and Monster speaker cable. Later that year, I'd actually buy AQ Type 4, cut from the spool.
I don't ever recall hearing "Too Cool To Fall In Love" on the radio. Have you?
