35 years ago, solely by word of mouth and the tape trade, did we learn about Metallica's new album, Master Of Puppets . Even in the SF Chronicle/Examiner's Sunday Pink Section, you'd only know, by perusing the concert listings.

The album kicked off with "Battery." So inspired, we'd take Muni Metro after school, get off at Embarcadero station, and hang out on Battery Street. To you and your classmates, Metallica weren't new ; you had, in 1985, already owned Ride The Lightning . Nevertheless, it was with great pride, that we locals were able to call Metallica our own.
