The old 'hood

We lament not taking photos, from the times before we turned adult in the 90s. Because so few were originally taken, hardly any exist in the first place. The one in the OP was taken outside of Peter and Sharon's old home. They lived up the hill from me.

The neighbors in my apartment building were black. Thus, my childhood was surrounded by and embedded in R&B, disco, funk, hip hop, soul, and disco.

The neighbors in Peter and Sharon's apartment building were white. There, we overheard more of what is now called "classic rock."

In the early-80s, I could have sworn that many in the 'hood were phasing out the large, wide, bulky all-in-one wooden stereos. These were replaced by components in "rack stereos."

It wasn't just "this was your life." The music inspired you to take up interest in audio, and shaped you as an audiophile.

After high school, Peter stuck around, attended local community colleges. He went to San Jose State. And when he'd come home in the early-90s, he would help teach me and Sharon how to drive.

Later, Peter moved to L.A., for work. One time, Sharon and I drove down to visit Peter. On the way, Sharon was singing and and rocking to Whitesnake's "Fool For You Loving." She was so enthusiastic, her butt came up off the driver's seat. Then you realize, "As audiophiles, why can't we have this much fun?"

But anyway, in early 1981, I was in 4th grade. My school was in the Marina District. Loved going to the Palace of Fine Arts (pictured at top) and the neighboring Exploratorium. If you were there in the late afternoon, the fog and cold air would pour through the Golden Gate. This was where breezy lite rock (you could include John Lennon's "Watching The Wheels") made its home.

Nowadays, people go to the Palace of Fine Arts, to take wedding and prom pictures. That's cool, but we still wish we (or our parents) had taken photos, during the 70s and 80s.
