In early summer 1993, Donald Fagen came out with his second solo album, Kamakiriad . Its overall thematic concept was going around in a car. Then in our late-teens and early-20s, my friends did drive around California, and just beyond. Or, we took short flights, to places like Vegas.
15 years ago, Fagen came out with his third solo album, Morph The Cat . My friends, now mostly married, did make trips to Vegas. But one time, instead of booking rooms as couples, we split up, with the boys in one suite, and the wives in another. If we took a straw poll, by a slim margin, "H Gang" was our favorite song on Morph The Cat .
Ah, check out that era's flip-phones and digital cameras. If you went to Vegas in the 90s, maybe you threw up, on account of alcohol. In 2006, without alcohol, you understood that throwing up meant you were pregnant!
"H Gang" is about wondering whatever happened to a cookin' band, no longer popular or in the public's mind.
