Talk Talk, "Living In Another World"

35 years ago, your Friday classes came to an end, and you were hanging out with your classmate, Librarian, who was a straight-A student. You were always curious about which cassettes your friends brought to school. When Librarian had Talk Talk's The Colour Of Spring , you thought to yourself, "Well, she's got deeper taste than most."

In those days, you shared your Walkmen, and without earbuds, a vital accessory was a male mini-headphone to two female mini adapter. That adapter allowed the use of two headphones.

Talk Talk's "Living In Another World" had Librarian gazing slightly into the distance. She recognized or interpreted the song as about the aftermath of a breakup. And then she pointed out that, as high school freshmen, most of your class hadn't dated yet. So there were no breakups to be had.

Librarian asked what your goals for the weekend were. You just wanted to sleep in. Since this was March, there was no NFL or MLB. Maybe there'd be college and pro basketball on TV. And at least here in the Bay Area, the NHL could not be found.

Envious of Librarian's smarts and straight-A's, your guy friends were mean to her. And of course, if you spent any time with her, your friends made fun of you. As a 13-year-old, you just did not have the ability to tell Librarian to ignore your guy friends. Meanwhile, you learned that her goal was to keep taking the SAT test, and eventually get a perfect score [1600 back then].

You and Librarian lived across town from each other, but before you split, you asked if you could borrow her Talk Talk cassette for the weekend. She obliged, and she borrowed your Prefab Sprout cassette.

Over the weekend, your friends met at one guy's Lower Pacific Heights home. His family had a columnar stereo stack. Some guys brought cassettes, which got to be played on that rack stereo. You didn't dare admit that the Talk Talk cassette belonged to Librarian. Your friend then transferred the cassette to a small boombox. You guys then walked over to Alta Plaza Playground. With "Living In Another World" playing, your guy friends wondered "Whatever happened to The Police and Van Halen?"

Back home, you thought about Librarian. Since it was past Valentine's Day, you guessed that the next time you could send a candy gram (you did not know when Librarian's birthday was) was Easter. While listening to "Living In Another World," you were determined to send Librarian an Easter candy gram, with a note apologizing for your guy friends' meanness.

p.s.: Librarian always seemed to get a 1580 on her SATs, close to perfect. She was pretty certain she knew which analogy or which area-under-the-curve problem she must have gotten wrong.
