Responding to the Princess post below, several readers wanted to know more about your smart classmate, who got new glasses, and then was called "Librarian." As a top student, she was not part of any cliques. Thus, if you got over your fears, you could approach her. That doesn't mean conversations were easy, but at least you did not have to fight through throngs, in order to get to her.

So, what do you do? Share your Walkmen! And that was among the first time you heard Nu Shooz's "I Can't Wait." You had absolutely NO qualms, about Librarian doing that herky-jerky, stilted, no-rhythm "dance." Then you did not have to be embarrassed, for not having any dance moves. Just enjoy the music.

By early 1986, Nu Shooz were down to the then husband-and-wife team of John Smith and Valerie Day. Instead of hailing from New York or L.A., they came from Portland, Oregon.

Wanting you to join them for some hoops, your guy friends came for you. "Oh no," they sighed, "Inmate is with his 'girlfriend'."

Librarian stood up, and gave your friends the stare . Referring back to your friends' "your girlfriend stinks" quote, Librarian admonished them, "I heard what you said."

Thing was, with that stare, Librarian didn't need to say anything more. You did not know what to do or say, and just froze. Librarian took off her glasses, and while wiping them, said, "You don't need my permission, to go play with your friends."

Still frozen, your default was to stay with Librarian. But then she put her glasses back on, flashed a smile (which was rare for her), and shoo'd you away.

Miffed, your guy friends muttered, "Your 'girlfriend' is a bitch!"

But hey, your guy friends got one thing right. They brought both black and white shirts. Thus, when everyone broke out into teams, you could identify which players were on which team.
