35 years ago, as high school freshmen, our concerns were nearby and small. But then, with us being in San Francisco, we felt surrounded by the bloom of AIDS. We watched in stunned horror, as the space shuttle Challenger exploded. We were losing the war on drugs. And then, we were admonished, "If you can't take care of yourself, how are you going to take care of a baby?"
With these things as the backdrop, issues became gripping and real, when we heard Jackson Browne's "For America." And this, really, was when we looked beyond just wearing matching clothes.
Your classmates took the song, and said, "Despite our differences, we are all Americans."
Now, with COVID and politics dividing us, reunions have been canceled. As middle-aged moms, maybe we do not want one more child, or, heck, maybe we are not able to have any more. Our sons and and daughters are in their teens. And we are looking for the 2021 equivalent of JB's "For America."
