AC/DC, "Hail Caesar"

During the holidays, San Francisco's Embarcadero Center is lit up. Such was the case in late 1987, when I met ACS, via the Volleyball Club. She lived in the Sunset, and was one of several schoolmates, who came out during Winter Break, to the Sunset Rec Center. The ebullient ACS then helped follow that up, by trying to get others to come out, to play sports.

When we returned to school for the Spring 1988 semester, AC/DC came out with the killer "Heatseeker," which amped up even the nerdiest girls.

At the end of 1995, we had graduated from college, and were in the workforce. Even if we were back home in San Francisco, we just could not get enough people together for large team sports. ACS was both my girlfriend and bowling partner, based out of the now-defunct Japantown Bowl.

The day after Christmas 1995, the J-town contingent flew to Las Vegas, for bowling tournaments. We stayed at the Excalibur, which, on account of having multiple buildings, was one of the world's largest hotels. ACS and I had our own room, but were put in charge of looking after a bunch of the high school kids, who were without their parents. And that made ACS and me feel old! Of course, the kids called the hotel "Sexcalibur," and enjoyed the arcades and games.

Vegas was always a popular destination for Hawaiians. But we did not know then, that Vegas would become such a magnet for Bay Area denizens.

ACS and I didn't bowl all that well, which, yeah, angered us. But we were getting older, and realized that there was so much more to do, in Vegas. We were at a record store, which had the new AC/DC album, Ballbreaker . Hearing "Hail Caesar," ACS remarked, "Maybe we should have spent more, and stayed at Caesar's Palace. And we'd be able to ditch these kids!"

Back home in the Bay Area, ACS and I didn't particularly care for "Hail Caesar," or the rest of Ballbreaker . But it was something to add variety, to your AC/DC play list.
