It's the music

My parents were born in the 1930s, and generally did not have music. My mom says that the most music she had was when she had hula lessons.

My generation grew up in the 70s and 80s, and turned adult in the 90s. We were exposed to and immersed in music, which was not just "a part of" our lives, it WAS our life. When my old high school classmates look back, we had music throughout the day. If we had a clock radio, we woke up to it. On our commutes to school, we needed our Walkmen to prevent us from falling back asleep on MUNI. Sitting in front of our lockers, we'd listen to music. My friends would meet in study hall, and exchange tapes and CDs. We had music while playing sports. Those who took cheer or dance had music. On the long commutes home, listening to music was therapeutic. We listened to music while doing homework. Some classmates had shower radios, and listened to music while bathing. And we fell asleep, while listening to music.

Here in San Francisco, we had (a) discotheques bringing in dance music, (b) the hard rock underground, and (c) the cool fog making new wave and synthpop popular and enjoyable. Yeah, yeah, Stereotypical Audiophiles do not relate to that, but that is who we are.

The photo above is of Lake Merced, which was/is right across the street from our high school. Before climate change, Lake Merced was always foggy. So the image of a Nessie-type plesiosaur rising from the foggy banks of Lake Merced was the inspiration for wanting the Loch Monster as our mascot. Now you know :-)

The music, regardless of genre or epoch, does not let us forget. So yeah, some memories are hazy, some are half/half, and others are clear. And hey, when enough time passes, we'll have vivid recollections of 2021.
