Chaka Khan, "Love Of A Lifetime"

It went undetected at the time, but 35 years ago, on a gray S.F. morning, an incident started the process of breaking the wall between boys and girls. I was innocently waiting for Mr. Jackson's World History class to begin, when my fellow frosh, Julie, shimmied into the room. Walkman in tow, Julie was enthusiastically boogie-ing to Chaka Khan's "Love Of A Lifetime."

Julie did this S-shaped side-to-side wiggle, bumping anyone within reach. "Love Of A Lifetime" was so infectious, several of us joined in. Funny thing was, even in folk dancing, boys and girls were loathe to touch each other. But here we were, in staid World History class, joyfully bumping into each other. After this, boys and girls were more apt to touch each other, albeit more so in PE and dances.

If "Love Of A Lifetime" sounds like Scritti Politti, it's 'cuz Green Gartside co-wrote, co-produced, and sang backup on it. Here in the Bay Area, "Love Of A Lifetime" is hardly ever played. But when it is, watch out. The now middle-aged moms ditch what they're doing, and boogie like they are back in high school.
