Ralph Tresvant, "Sensitivity "

When I entered UCSC in September 1989, Student Housing placed most of the "ethnic minorities," as they were called then, at Oakes and Merrill. But I was at Crown, which was overwhelmingly white. We'd have gatherings in the dorms' lounges, and someone would always speak up, "I can't stand that we're all lumped together as whites ."

And so, one by one, Caucasian students would disclose which European countries they came from. A skinny brunette, Cole, was actually Nicole. But she didn't like to be called "Nikki," so she had everyone call her "Cole." Although she was from L.A., she said that many of her ancestors came from Romania.

And of course, the big boorish frat guy, Christian, loudly proclaimed that Cole was a "Blood-sucking, Transylvanian, commie vampire!"

I don't know about that, but I soon learned that Cole liked to sleep in just an oversized gown or shirt - no bra or panties.

At the same time, New Edition were on hiatus. Bel Biv Devoe became popular, and then, in 1990, lead singer Ralph Tresvant came out with a solo album.

For sophomore year (1990-91), Cole and a friend lived off-campus, near the beaches. Because Cole and I were in the same Politics class, we not only got to reconnect, but we studied together. And while studying, a local radio station, perhaps KDON, played Tresvant's "Sensitivity." Versus Santa Cruz, "Sensitivity" was much more popular in our hometowns of L.A. and S.F.

One night 30 years ago, I was over at Cole's apartment, to study for midterms. Hot damn, Cole's friend/roommate slept in the buff. At least Cole wore a big, loose shirt. The next day, we once again heard "Sensitivity." The friend said that we should hop in the car, hit the coast, and walk their dog. Ha ha ha, the friend dared Cole to go commando.

Cole just casually shrugged, "I'm not having my period, so why not?," and, before stepping out of the car, removed her shorts and panties. For the record, hardly anyone was around, on that sunny, dry, but kind of breezy and cool Winter '91 day.

Whenever I hear Tresvant's "Sensitivity," it makes me smile, and sigh about when it came out, 30 years ago. Good times.
