Gerardo, "Rico Suave"

30 years ago, when I was at UC Santa Cruz, the student body was predominantly/overwhelmingly white. And a lot of my dormmies liked Gerardo's "Rico Suave." Yes, we talked about music, including "Rico Suave." They even tried to roll their R's. Some guys, who were already shirtless, donned a bandana.

However, some were so embarrassed, and one white coed actually sought out the few Hispanics in our dorm, and apologized!

I don't recall which dormmies said what, but you never forget some of the things they said. To start, one white coed said that Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad" set Hispanics back 17 years. She was embarrassed that, as a child, she would always yell, "I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas, from the bottom of my heart," at the top of her lungs. She argued that it wasn't until Los Lobos excellently covered "La Bamba," that Feliciano was let off the hook.

But then in early 1991, one guy in my dorm said that Gerardo's "Rico Suave" once again was setting Hispanics back. Thing was, everyone referred to Gerardo as "Mexican." FWIW, he was actually Ecuadorian.

Years later, one of my college housemates said that Gerardo himself wasn't let off the hook, until Los Del Rio's "Macarena" became a worldwide smash.
