30 years ago, we were in the middle of a 7-year drought, but it wasn't nearly as dry as it is now. I was a sophomore at UC Santa Cruz, near which the San Lorenzo River (really just a stream) flowed. Funny thing was, even during drought, all it took was a shower, and the San Lorenzo River seemed like it overflowed. It washed debris, and deposited it at its mouth, which formed the eastern divide or boundary of the Boardwalk.
In 1989, Dokken broke up. Guitarist George Lynch took drummer Mick Brown, and formed the Lynch Mob. 30 years ago, we were enjoying their "River Of Love." In the dorms, no one had a car. But whenever someone did have a car, we liked to go to walking in Henry Cowell State Park, and hit the swimming holes along the San Lorenzo River.
Originally, the Santa Cruz Mission was built too close to the San Lorenzo River. So when the latter overflowed, the original Mission got flooded. The Mission is now a little higher up. Yes, Highway 1 in Santa Cruz is also Mission Street. Yes, River Street runs parallel to the San Lorenzo River.
We listen to Lynch Mob's "River Of Love" now, and no, it does not feel like 1991. A common thought is that, had "River Of Love" come out 3 or 4 years earlier, it would have been better-known. Personally, it reminds me that none of my close friends went to UCSC. Although, some of my friends' kids now attend UCSC. The photo above, taken at the main Santa Cruz beach near the mouth of the San Lorenzo River, was pre-COVID.
Because Lynch Mob's "River Of Love" is mainstream rock, but not well-known, audiophiles like to sneak it in.
