It's not what it seems. My friend's family owns an apartment building, and she has a unit on the top floor. No one else has access to the roof. This was taken on a Sunday, when almost no one's in the DTLA office buildings.
My friend's husband works in professional lighting, control, audio, and video. He was the one who suggested Canare's L-4E6S, which could be terminated with 5-pin XLRs, for DC use. For this purpose, the Canare cable is excellent.
But anyway, he was talking about The Mamas and the Papas' "California Dreamin', which now celebrates its 55th anniversary. He said, "I don't know, for us born and raised in California, it's just there . I suppose it means something completely different, for those not born in California."
My friend's husband was born in 1966, so he says, "Hmmm, maybe," his parents were listening to "California Dreamin'," while he was a baby, "But they're not into this kind of music."
"White Christmas" supposedly was written from Arizona, longing for New York's snowy winters. Quite the opposite, John and Michelle Phillips were in New York for the holidays, and longed for Los Angeles' sunny and warm weather. That was their inspiration, for writing "California Dreamin'."
Not that "California Dreamin'" ever went away, but it got another boost, in the early-90s, when Wilson Phillips (of which Chynna Phillips, John & Michelle's daughter, is a member) came about. And that's how "California Dreamin'" became a stronger presence for those of us in Gen X.
