After we graduated from middle school in 1985, I didn't see my classmate Maureen. 4 years later, while at UC Santa Cruz, I attended Sunday evening Catholic services, put on by the Newman Club. There, Maureen and I locked eyes, and called out each other's name.

I lived in the NE part of campus, while Maureen lived in the NW side, where there were elevated walkways. 30 years ago, during the Winter 1991 quarter, Maureen remarked, "For the most part, the campus is just..... school . But you know what? It also turns into something romantic."

While Surface's "The First Time" played, Maureen pointed out that, the mundane elevated walkways were where students often embraced. "I've seen a lot of people kissing," Maureen said. She blushed, "In fact, that's where I kissed a girl!"

Because Santa Cruz was cut off from civilization, Maureen and I didn't know that Surface's "The First Time" became a #1 hit, in late January 1991. But every time it plays, you see people come out of the woodwork, exclaiming, "I love this song!" In fact, that's exactly what my wedding guests said, as "The First Time" played at the banquet.
