Sting, "All This Time"

30 years ago, I sort of did not want to return to UC Santa Cruz, for the Winter 1991 quarter. Because of the drought, those mornings were cold and dry, and you didn't want to get out of bed. However, there was always a positive and effervescent girl in the dorm, who would say that, as opposed to the heatwaves, you could run around in that cold weather, and not work up a sweat. And besides, walking the paths through the foliage was relaxing.

Everyone liked Sting's "All This Time." He actually wrote it, in response to his dad passing away. But Sting added uplifting music, to pull himself and his audience, out of the doldrums. Audiophiles loved how the drums were recorded, and used these as audio references.

"All This Time" referenced rivers and the sea. The UCSC campus was near the San Lorenzo River (it's more of a creek), which drained to the Pacific Ocean, just to the east of the Boardwalk. And you know what? Because the water was cold all year-round, we made it a new year's tradition, to hit the beaches.

When your stereo brings "All This Time's" drums to life, it's as though the past 30 years never happened. When you re-read the January 1991 Stereophile, you recall the optimism, which high-end audio promised.
