An audiophile responded to the Pet Shop Boys "Being Boring" post below, and okayed being quoted. "I am a gay man, but regardless of that, this is the most beautiful post of the year."

I jokingly said, "Well, the year just started, so it's all downhill from now on!"

We then turned to a song which he and many others may not have fully felt. 30 years ago, Australia's the Divinyls had a hit, with "I Touch Myself." But you really needed to be in college, to witness its impact.

You see, when Cyndi Lauper came out with "She Bop," we were only in middle school. But when "I Touch Myself" came out in Spring 1991, it was a siren call. All of the coeds came out of the woodwork, and talked about self-pleasure. I told the audiophile above, "For once, we guys weren't idiots. We STFU, and let the girls talk."

At the time, I happened to live in the dorms. My eyes looked away, but my ears listened intently to the girls. You never forget overhearing them talking about rubbing one out, while (a) alone in her dorm room, and (b) in the shower. Then one would speak up, "Eew, that's why I wear slippers" in the shower.

Songwriters Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg had previously written "Alone" for Heart; "I'll Stand By You" for The Pretenders; "Like A Virgin" for Madonna; "So Emotional" for Whitney Houston. But on "I Touch Myself," Kelly and Steinberg actually worked with the Divinyls.

Andrea, the curly blonde who lived in the triple room next door, liked the way "I Touch Myself" grooved. She was frequently sexiled, and sighed that her two roommates therefore didn't need to rub one out. "I Touch Myself" was fairly common in the dorms. In her smooth voice, Andrea would tell guys, "Oh, don't act like you don't do it, too!"
