An Inmate complained that, with our coverage of the music of 1990, we "forgot about" DNA's trip hop remake of Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner."
In the early-80s, while a student at Barnard College, Vega went to a Tom's Restaurant. "Tom's Diner" would appear twice on Vega's 1987 album, Solitude Standing . One is acapella, the other with piano and guitar accompaniment.
In 1990, DNA took Vega's vocals, and spliced them onto a rhythm track from Soul II Soul's "Keep On Movin'." The result was a #5 hit.
Tom's Restaurant would, in the 90s, appear on Seinfeld .
