In the 70s, most of my neighbors had those wooden, all-in-one stereos. Those stereos erred on the warm, low-rez, big side. At the end of 1980, I was at a neighbor, who did have one of those big Fisher all-in-one stereos. But when Stephanie Mills' "Never Knew Love Like This Before" came on, the sound was focused and clear. Hmmmm.
"Never Knew Love Like This Before" was written and produced by James Mtume and Reggie Lucas. Mtume was in Miles Davis' band, and Lucas would go on to produce Madonna's debut album. The crisp production would become a blueprint for Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, whose production skills became the sound of the latter half of the 80s, and the New Jack Swing of the early 90s.
But "Never Knew Love Like This Before" has stood the test of time, and sounds as fresh today, as it did in 1980.
