Audiophiles have a hard time agreeing on anything, but they commonly complain to me that they have never cared for freestyle dances. In the latter half of the 80s, whether or not you had fun at these dances, you often heard grumbling that DJs didn't play enough slow songs. Heck, you yourself lobbied that complaint.
30 years ago, I finished my very first quarter at UCSC, where I had no old friends. It felt soooooo good, to go home, and once again meet up with old friends. Hey, maybe Stevie B, the self-proclaimed "King Of Freestyle," was listening. He came out with his own slow song, "Because I Love You (The Postman Song)." At those year-end dances, this song was ubiquitous. Not only that, it became a huge crossover hit, and went all the way to #1.
Nowadays, the girls (now middle-aged moms) get chills, whenever Stevie B's "Because I Love You (The Postman Song)" is reproduced accurately. It harkens back to when we were teenagers, when we finally had a slow song to sway to. Other audiophiles tell me that "throwback" and adult contemporary radio stations still play it.
