Another new-to-me audiophile emailed, and admitted that he perused AA's other forums, and turned a blind eye to Rocky Road -- until now. He asked to be quoted: "This place is frickin' awesome! The variety! The depth! I did not I know that any audiophiles had such tastes."
He cited the Dexys Midnight Runners post below, and wrote, "Don't forget about Don't Stand Me Down ."
I wrote back, "Well, people can't forget , if they never knew in the first place!"
Ah, my high school's front steps. This is where the morose "modern rock" fans often hung out. At the end of 1985, one such guy had Don't Stand Me Down on cassette. This was the first, and only, time I've heard this album. My favorite was the over 12-minute long "This Is What She's Like," a screed against England's rich. It even has a line which goes: "Bill, you know the newly wealthy peasants, with their home bars and hi-fis?" Oops.
"This Is What She's Like" starts with a 2-minute spoken intro. It goes through tempo changes, but most of you will love the roughly 4-minute ending jam.
Back in '85, this was not promoted. Lead singer Kevin Rowland seemed to be mentally unstable. And with the band dressed in business suits, this did not sell. Arguably, because nobody knew about it back then, more people know about this now.
