Cinderella, "Heartbreak Station"

Depressing. 30 years ago, as beautiful as UC Santa Cruz was, none of my friends went there. Worse, in the four years I was there, hardly any of my girlfriends were fellow Banana Slugs. My serious girlfriends were home in San Francisco, and/or went to UC Berkeley.

One Saturday, I ate brunch in the dining hall with a skinny coed, Celia, who lived in the dorm across the quad from mine. After eating, we went to her room. Neither of us looked happy. Cinderella's "Heartbreak Station" played, and that caused me to admit that the LDR with KJ wasn't working. In these pre-internet days, you could not do much, other than use snail mail, and pay for long distance phone calls. The breakups were painful.

Celia then said, "At least you had someone. I can't seem to snag any decent guys here."

Celia said, "Let's get outta here," borrowed a friend's car, and drove to the abandoned tracks, which ended up at the former Davenport cement factory.

I have scanned this as best I could. Apropos of "Heartbreak Station," I got down at track level, used Celia's camera, and took this photo. Celia said (and I agreed) that UCSC had plenty of decent-looking guys. I said that UCSC's coeds were predominantly of the wannabe hippie variety. And when Celia looked unkempt, she blended in with the wannabe hippies. However, on this day, Celia did the fold-and-tuck to her jeans, something wannabe hippies did not do. I told her that if she did things like that, she'd differentiate herself from those wannabe hippies.

I do not recall where I bought this CD single of Cinderella's "Heartbreak Station." Most likely, I got it from a downtown Santa Cruz independent record store. While my wife understands that "Heartbreak Station" hurts, it is still nevertheless a great song, one she likes.
