At the end of 1980, I was still 8-years-old. Holidays or not, the adults were buying Steely Dan's new album, Gaucho . And they did so on LP, not cassette.
The album kicked off with "Babylon Sisters," which referenced "San Francisco show and tell." I took that to mean places like the Mitchell Brothers theater, which was just over the hill and down the street, from my house.
I also recall the adults debating over the meaning of "Babylon Sisters." One neighbor, who looked like Jackson Browne, suggested that it's about a guy who picks up two prostitutes in L.A., and then they drive up to San Francisco. Picture yourself as an 8-year-old hearing these things, and you can see why a part of childhood died right then and there.
Nevertheless, it's 40 years later, and we are still enjoying this. You can get Gaucho on a dual-layer disc, with SACD and Redbook CD layers. Either layer sounds solid.
