A-ha, "Waiting For Her"

Ready for more somber, melancholy, and depressing music? 30 years ago, the Bay Area was in a prolonged drought. I was away at college, while my girlfriend KJ was home in San Francisco. Despite the sunny weather, the water was too cold, and there wasn't a decent surf. The end of 1990 sported lots of longing and/or breakup music. Further distancing themselves from upbeat synthpop, A-ha came out with East Of The Sun West Of The Moon , with equally sad black & white photography.

My dorm room had 4 walls. One was the door, and opposite of that was the window. On my closet side was Gorilla Troy, who serenaded the entire dorm with his offensive rap music. On my bed side was a triple room with three girls. Lumberjack Girl was right on the other side of the wall, and she was frequently having gross sex with dopey David Schwimmer-type guys. Heck, even the in the double room above me, one of the girls occasionally had sex. But at least she seemed to be having fun with it.

From the triple room, the petite blonde, Andrea, would often come over to many room. During the end of 1990, the two albums we listened to the most were Prefab Sprout's Jordan: The Comeback and A-Ha's East Of The Sun West Of The Moon . Despite the subject matter, "Waiting For Her" was excellent. It should have been a single.

Incidentally, the recording is actually not hazy, foggy, and ethereal. The 2015 Deluxe Version shows that the recording is actually more clear, lively, and vibrant, than anyone had heard or expected. This cleaner sound lets the music, not the haze, set the mood.
