The Beautiful South, "A Little Time"

When I was at UC Santa Cruz 30 years ago, world beat and alt-rock were the dominant musical genres. That allowed the obscure "A Little Time," by The Beautiful South, to get some recognition.

Subject-wise, "A Little Time" was the alt-rock take on, for example, The Human League's "Human." A couple needs a little time and space apart. And during that time, they both explore other dates/lovers.

Years later, my friend Sandy, who had graduated from UC Davis (which is flat farmland near Sacramento), went to the beaches in Santa Cruz. With "A Little Time" playing in the background, Sandy realized that, if she had gone to beautiful Santa Cruz, she'd "spend so much time with my boyfriend, he'd get sick of me!"

I hardly ever had a girlfriend from Santa Cruz, so my response was, "That's assuming that you had a Santa Cruz boyfriend. If he were from another school, you'd miss his dearly, and become very upset, that he wasn't with you."

Anyway, my dormmates thought of The Beautiful South as "Schoolhouse Rock for adults." When I talk to audiophiles around the world, hardly any recognize The Beautiful South, just a handful from the band's native England.
