Today, communications are easy. But when we were in college 30 years ago, those were the pre-internet days. You basically had just (a) agonizingly slow snail mail, and (b) expensive long-distance phone calls.
Two of my friends went to colleges on separate coasts. Lawrence went to UC Davis, while May went somewhere back east. Winger's "Miles Away" basically was the nail in the coffin. Years later, through work, they were both in SoCal. They reconnected, got married, and moved back to the Bay Area. Although "Miles Away" is a painful breakup song, May nevertheless thinks it's very good.
I went to UC Santa Cruz, but most of my girlfriends attended UC Berkeley. I was with one of them at the Top Dog, which used to be on Hearst. She said, "If you weren't so dumb, and had actually gotten into Cal, you could have been right here with me. And we wouldn't have had a long-distance relationship, would we?"
In response, I stated that they should have gone to the much more romantic Santa Cruz. The few times my girlfriends made the trek to Santa Cruz were much more relaxing, enjoyable, and romantic, than my visits to Berkeley.
My wife loves Winger's "Miles Away," again, despite it being a breakup song. In fact, when I'm evaluating cables, "Miles Away" is one of her acid tests. That song better be emotional and heartbreaking! Hahaha, one of my audiophile friends likes to joke, "I never had anyone to begin with, so this being a breakup song doesn't affect me one bit!"
